  • Mother’s Birthday

    ©2004 Neal Gladstone

You were born this day hip hip hooray
So we threw this party for you
But with due respect we must not forget
The one who conceived and bore you
Let’s drink a toast to your mother
It’s the least that we can do
    It’s your mother’s birthday too
For 9 long months she groans and grunts
    And turns into a teepee
Then out you slid and all you did was
Breast feed and go pee pee
So pick up the phone and call her
It’s the least that you can do
    It’s your mother’s birthday too
For 16 years you cause her tears
While she works her fingers boney
She bakes you pie while she scrapes by
    On crackers and boloney
So pick up the phone and call her
It’s the least that you can do
    It’s your mother’s birthday too
Then one fine day you move away saying
    “See you at Thanksgiving”
Well she builds you a shrine and she spends her time
Asking if life is worth living
So pick up the phone and call her
It’s the least that you can do
    It’s your mother’s birthday too
    Bridge
You think you’re so special, go on take your bow
But without your mother, where would you be now
Would it ask so much you ungrateful putz
To think of her more often
How will you sleep you selfish creep
When you’ve put her in her coffin
So pick up the phone and call her
It’s the least that you can do
    It’s your mother’s birthday too

  • Mr. August

    ©2004 Neal Gladstone

My mama raised me modest, virtuous and true
I never meant to cause her any grief
And so I’m loathe to mention
    That despite her best intention
I seem to have turned over a new leaf
I’m Mr. August baring it all
Hung in your kitchen and tacked to your wall
Ain’t it sublime cause hey baby I’m Mr. August
I have to admit it I look pretty swell
Out in the garden au naturel
Did anyone bring a little sun screen for Mr. August
I got a little bit nervous when I was pressed into service so late in the year
That so much exposure might impair my composure
And put a crimp in my career
I might look happy but you’d be surprised
There’s a piano crushing my thighs
88 keys putting the squeeze on Mr. August
You know It’s hard to perform when you can’t get warm
And you’re wearin’ the bare essentials
But you brought me luck when you put me up
    And unleashed my potential
We knew when this started that it couldn’t last
Soon Mr. A will slip into the past
It’s nearly time to say goodbye to Mr. August
Now days grow shorter and sweet summer fades
So blow me a kiss and flip up my page
We had a good run I hope you had fun with Mr. August
You can be sure I’ll always be your Mr. August
    … doesn’t time just fly…..

  • Red Beans

Mama’s makin supper in the kitchen
    Daddy’s out curryin the mare
Sissy’s still talkin on the telephone
    She’s goin for a record I swear
Me and Davey settin up the table
Mama starts to hum a little song
Me and Davey heard that tune before
    Pretty soon we’re singin along
Chorus: It’s a song about beans, red beans
    With corn bread and greens
If you really wanna know what life means
You better start eating red beans
    Everybody gathers round the table
Sissy is the last one there
She stomps out madder than a hornet
What the heck she do to her hair
Davey squeeks out a little giggle
Mama shoots him down with a look
    Everybody sits down easy
Daddy reads a blessing from a book
Chorus: Now it’s time for some beans
    With corn bread and greens
If you really wanna know what life means
You better start eating red beans
Beans with bacon beans with cheese
Beans with chili gonna make you sneeze
You got frogs in the river and bugs on the screens
And a kettle full of steamin red beans
Mama sits with Daddy by the fire
He puts a little kiss on her cheek
Sissy locks herself in the bathroom
She could be in there for a week
Me and Davey play some checkers
Pretty soon it’s time for bed
The sheets are cool and silky
But there’s just one thing in my head
    Chorus

  • River Man

    ©2003 Neal Gladstone

You were standing by the river
With the sunlight on your face
You were casting you were dancing
To the music of this place
You were watching you were listening
Tell me river what you know
River find me river guide me
Show me how to let you go
    It was autumn seasons turning
    Something stirring wild and deep
    River calling river twisting
    Then insisting come with me
    River surging river crashing
    River merging with your soul
River find me river guide me
Show me how to let you go
You were one of Gaia’s angels
Answering her clear and urgent call
Now you leave us with so many questions
When we need your strength and spirit most of all
I can see you in the sunrise
    Casting diamonds from your line
I can hear you gently laughing
With the river in your eyes
You are watching you are listening
Tell me river what you know
River find me river guide me
Show me how to let you go

  • Save Our Planet

This is the water celebrate the water
May you always drink your fill
We can save the treasure if we stand together
    And celebrate the water

May you always drink your fill
We can save the treasure if we stand together
    And celebrate the air
CHORUS: Don’t think we don’t need you we need you

Those who care lift your voices
And join us as we sing
Save our planet keep our planet green

May you always sing your fill
We can save the treasure if we stand together
    And celebrate the music

  • I Know That

    ©2009 Neal Gladstone

    CHORUS:
I know that, don’t you think I know that
I know that, don’t you think I know that
I know that, don’t you think I’ve heard those words before
I don’t want to hear them any more.
I used to think you were so refined
I looked to you for direction
I used to stand in the waiting line
    Vying for your attention
You ask me to believe everything that you do
Write your biography and walk around behind you
Treat somebody like a monkey, monkey’s gonna bite you.
    CHORUS
You want a choir of devotees to idolize you
But even devotees get tired of being lied to
Treat somebody like a monkey, monke’y’s gonna bite you.
    CHORUS

  • Goodbye Song

    ©2009 Neal Gladstone

And now at last the hour has come
To say good night to everyone
We’d love to play all evening
But the folks in back are sleeping!
We’ve had such a lovely time
You’ve all been so very kind
‘Til we get the chance to see you again
You’ll be often on our minds
We would surely love to stay
We have so much more to say
‘Til we get the chance to see you again
    Adios and Namaste
    Someday when we reminisce
    We will all remember this
We will remember these good times
    Forever and ever with you.
Long after you have left the theater
Long after you are in your beds
The sweet sounds of applause and laughter
Will still be running through our heads

  • Adhesive Steve

    Have you seen Adhesive Steve
He’s the guest who wouldn’t leave
    Small dogs and children flee
    When he’s in their vicinity
    Steve makes adhesive coats
For label tape and Post It notes
It’s always just a little hard to breathe
    When you’re near Adhesive Steve
    Steve always stands too close
You see the food stains on his shirt
You can smell his after shave
You can see his dental work
Thick hairs curl out his nose
And tangle up in matted groves
It’s always just a little hard to breathe
    When you’re near Adhesive Steve
There is nothing you can do
Once big Steve is stuck on you
The more you try to wriggle free
The tighter his embrace will be
Brace will be Brace will be
Steve has a wife named Claire
But no one knows exactly where
    She’s asking for divorce
But he won’t give her one of course
He says that they should stick it out
Cause that’s what love is all about
His unlucky wife just can’t believe
    She’s stuck with Adhesive Steve
Steve sits in his special chair
And watches cop shows on TV
He likes to see them kick some butt
    Maintaining our security
And then he has his late night snacks
Of sticky buns and chicken backs
Can you imagine what it’s like to be
    Adhesive Steve

  • Bed Time

    ©2005 Neal Gladstone

It’s bed time it’s bed time
    Rest my weary head time
Time to claim my little piece of paradise
I close my eyes and make my reservation
For passage to an unknown destination
    Don’t wait up for me
You know where I’ll be…. sleeping
It’s sleep time it’s sleep time
    Secrets of the deep time
Time to sink delicious into emptiness
A thousand velvet tentacles embrace me
Their saffron scented chemicals erase me
Kindly close the door I’m not here anymore
    I’m sleeping
The players paint their faces on
    The maestro flashes his baton
A dark and swirling overture surrounds me
    Past and future intertwine
    Numbers taste and colors rhyme
Spirits peer from shadows all around me
It’s dream time it’s dream time
    Gently down the stream time
Time to watch my reason slowly drift away
I tumble through a distant sacred ocean
I shatter into crystals of devotion
Now I understand I dream therefore I am sleeping

  • Blues Dilemma

    ©2008 Neal Gladstone

    Wooooah
I’m a blues singer baby and as you might expect
I tend to be dejected and my love life is a wreck
This unfortunate condition is the price of my success
Cause my fans are only happy as long as I’m depressed
O Baby, you know what I mean
    I’m the every-single-song-someone-done-me-wrong queen
Now I get mighty tired of always feelin blue
I wonder what it be like to try out something new
But the game of fame and fortune it keeps me in a jam
In fact the worse I feel the more popular I am
Oh baby, it’s the same routine
    I’m the every-single-song-someone-done-me-wrong queen
Now Charlie was a boozer And Michael was a cheat
Leroy took my money And Jake died in his sleep
Buddy was a liar And Clarence was a jerk
Rafael was phobic — He was terrified of work
I went to see a doctor to get me back on track
He said I needed treatment and put me on Prozac
A thousand dollars later I gained a little ground
But as soon as I felt better my record sales went down
    Oh baby, where’s my nicotine
    I’m the every-single-song-someone-done-me-wrong queen
Now Eddie was a baby And Johnny loved cocaine
Jay was way too kinky And Bobby went insane
Dave was pretty normal But he got hit by a truck
Michael drowned in Puget Sound And Frank ran off with Chuck
Well, I tore up my prescription and drank a couple beers
And wrote a million seller that had everyone in tears
My dreams of love and romance have all gone up in smoke
But I’d rather be in misery than satisfied and broke
    Oh baby, call my limosine
    I’m the every-single-song-someone-done-me-wrong queen
