  • Song for us All

    © 1996 Neal
    Gladstone

In a dream I came upon a melody
There it burned me deep and burned me longBut when the sun released the morning
    The melody was gone
I closed my eyes and strained my memory
To find the notes so sweet and clear
But I was following a song
    No one would ever hear
And the song was a song for us all
But a song from a dream that I cannot recall
    Never heard never sung
    Touching no one at all
    Fingers chase the fleeting visions
    Apparitions on the keys
Looking for the strains of silver among the ivories
What a vain and lonely sorcery
How very strange it must appear
Casting spells and hearing voices that no one else can
    hear
And a song is a song for us all
But a song from a dream that I cannot recall
    Never heard never sung
    Touching no one at all
    Somewhere that melody is wandering
As it has for dark and timeless past
Searching for a lonely dreamer to set it free at last
I believe that music is in everyone
Waiting for the chance to flow
While the poets write the words that everybody knows
And a song is a song for us all
It can rise through your life and awaken your soul
This I know this I feel this I sing to you all
    In a song

There’s something I should tell you,
But please don’t tell my wife
You may not want to hear it,
But it’s bugged you all your life
    It’s clear and it’s confusing,
    It’s simple and complex
It’s sex sex sex sex sex
You can’t discuss it with your neighbor
But you watch it on TV
It’s against the law to buy it,
But it’s legal if it’s free
    From the tiniest mosquito
    To Tyrannosaurus Rex
    Sex sex sex sex sex
Mother smacked you if you said it
When you were just a kid
You were uncool if you didn’t
    And suspended if you did
Every school boy knows about it
But it’s censored from the text
    Sex sex sex sex sex
You meet a guy from Frisco,
    He’s staring at your throat
He’s sexy if you like him,
    Obnoxious if you don’t
    You have to be suspicious,
    It’s just what he expects
    Sex sex sex sex sex
Now it’s okay if you do it,
But not on the first date
    It’s charming to imply it,
    But pushy to be straight
And don’t let on you’re thinking
    About what’s coming next
    Sex sex sex sex sex
    If you’re married it’s a blessing,
    If you’re single, it’s a sin
You do it with your husband
But you think of it with Jim
    He’s floating off in ecstasy,
    You’re balancing the checks
    Sex sex sex sex sex
You want to but you shouldn’t
You tried to but you couldn’t
And when you finally did it
    You suddenly wish you hadn’t
    You always face rejection
    You always risk infection
    Hey!
There’s no way to escape it,
They use it to sell cars
    It’s been going on forever,
    In palaces and bars
    They built California
    On the marriages it wrecks
Sex sex sex sex etc. etc.

Since you have no shame or self-control

  • Seed in Muh Teeth

Well my love made me a sandwich with lots of raspberry
    jam
I thanked her most profusely cause that’s the kinda guy
    I am
Well I took a bite and chewed it down
I rolled a soggy wad around
I really dug the crunchin sound
And when I was done I said, “Hon…
I got a seed in muh teeth and I just can’t get it outa
    there
Well try as I might it’s in so tight
And no matter what I do it’s stuck like glue
    Yes indeed (Whew w-w-whew)
I got a seed in muh teeth WELL
I looked into the mirror and I gave myself a scare
That seed was jammed in tighter than a rock star’s underwear
Well I picked and tongued and brushed and cleaned
    With dental floss and Listerine
With Spic and Span and Mr. Clean
And when I was done I said, “Hon….I
Well I went to see the dentist man and told him what
    was wrong
He pulled a giant needle out15 inches long
Well first he yanked my jaws apart
I screamed like hell and I bit him hard
He asked me for my mastercard
And when he was done he said “Son…you
Well I flew right down to Trinidad to see a gypsy woman
My Uncle Deek he told there this kind of thing is common
Well she made me drink a stinky brew
Of lizard balls and camel pooh
My hair fell out my tongue turned blue
And when she was done she said, “Mun…
Well I lost weight and got depressed – it was quite alarmin
Then one day my Uncle Deek said “Boy,
    you should take up farmin
Well, I filled my cheeks with corn and rice
They grew like mad to my surprise
    I never had to fertilize
And I cross pollinize while I’m kissin

  • Savings and Loan

    © 1991 Neal Gladstone

Are you tired of the same old grind
Where you scrimp and you work overtime
And in the end some other guy
Gets rich off what you do
Well take a little tip from me
    Someone with your ability
    Should take the opportunity
    That’s waiting here for you
If you want to start a little business that you can call your very own
Just call up your friendly congressman on your touch tone telephone
Send him a case of the best champagne
Write out a check to his campaign
Quick as a wink you’ll have your very own
    Savings and Loan
It’s the chance of a lifetime, a deal you can’t afford to miss
You keep all the profits and the tax payers take all the risk
And if you get into a jam
You can always count on your uncle Sam
It’s the sweetest scam you’ve ever known
    Savings and Loan
    Deregulation is sweeping the nation
America’s the land of the free
There’s plenty of credit so come on and get it
You’re backed up by the FDIC
Now nobody’s gonna to blame ya if you make a few mistakes
And do some speculation in high risk real estate
And if those loans should all go bad
The taxpayers will pick up the tab
And repay the billions that you’ve blown
    On your S & L
These deals won’t be around forever. You better get em while they last
Cause your friendly treasury department is running out of money fast
But once your foot is through the door
They can always print some more
Soon you’ll be as rich as Al Capone
    In your Savings and Loan

  • The Legend of Malango

    1989 Neal Gladstone

    He stood 5 foot 8 weighed 145
And everyone knew not a man alive
Could save a dollar or mow a yard
Or tell worse jokes or get as hard as…Malango
He grew up tough in New York City
Where the girls are fast and life ain’t pretty
He had half a stomach and one good eye
But people shook when he walked by…Malango
He stalked the halls of CHS
The sophomores feared him more than death
The junior boys cleared him a path
And the girls longed to share a bath with…Malango
He played volley ball like a man possessed
With an iron fist and 30 inch chest
The women screamed and quaked with fright
As they gazed in awe at his mighty spike…Malango
After work he’d wrap his hand
    Around an Old Milwaukee can
He liked his women like he liked his brew
    Clear, full-bodied, dark and cool…Malango
One day a new mime teacher rode into town
And challenged Joe to a silent show down
At center stage they took their places
Gasping and wheezing at 20 paces…Malango
That stranger was good but Joe was better
And hearts beat fast as hands slapped leather
The stranger knew his time had come
When he saw the massive gleaming gun of…Malango
And then one day he borrowed a buck
And climbed into his pickup truck
He slid her down into first gear
And said, “Hey, baby, I’m outa here.”…Malango
And late at night when children cry
And thunder rolls across the sky
As the final stroke of midnight falls
One name still echoes down the halls…Malango

  • The Best You Can Do

    1992 Neal
    Gladstone

When you go up you’re up
When you come down you’re down
Sometimes it takes a life of mistakes
    To turn you around
    Answers are hard to find
But one thing that I can surely say
    From the long view
    The best you can do
    Is give your love away
    Verse 2
Some of us shoot for the stars
Few of us hit the mark
Playing the game of fortune and fame
    Can break your heart
Nobody knows which way the wind’s gonna blow
But one thing I can surely say
From the long view the best you can do
    Is give your love away
    Bridge 1
Against a rising tide of greed and confusion
We seem to be losing ground
    But losing or winning
    The world keeps spinning around
    Verse 3
Some of us find our passion
    Some of us never do
Most of us stand with our hat in our hand
Waiting for our dreams to come true
    Life is a dangerous game
    It’s easy to be afraid
From the long view the best you can do
    Is give your love away
    Bridge 2
In a crazy world with too many choices
The voices can bring you down
    But losing or winning
    The world keeps spinning around
    Repeat
    Just when your hope
Is at the end of your rope
    The sun can break through

    And celebrate the water

  • River Man

    ©2003 Neal Gladstone

You were standing by the river
With the sunlight on your face
You were casting you were dancing
To the music of this place
You were watching you were listening
Tell me river what you know
River find me river guide me
Show me how to let you go
    It was autumn seasons turning
    Something stirring wild and deep
    River calling river twisting
    Then insisting come with me
    River surging river crashing
    River merging with your soul
River find me river guide me
Show me how to let you go
You were one of Gaia’s angels
Answering her clear and urgent call
Now you leave us with so many questions
When we need your strength and spirit most of all
I can see you in the sunrise
    Casting diamonds from your line
I can hear you gently laughing
With the river in your eyes
You are watching you are listening
Tell me river what you know
River find me river guide me
Show me how to let you go
